Trip of the Month – Brighton and South Downs

I am frequently asked by prospective customers for short break trip ideas for their luxury motorhome hire.  Following a chat with a customer recently who is heading to Love Supreme Jazz Festival in July I starting thinking of Brighton and the South Downs as a great area for such a campervan trip.  This specific couple wanted to extend their weekend festival by a few days (benefiting from our £99 per night rate) so it put me in full planning mode.

For those who know the A272, it is a stunning road across the South Downs National Park.  Passing through the delightful market towns of Midhurst and Petworth, it offers sensational views (this is where the huge A class windscreen is fully appreciated).  Along this route you will find a wide array of quiet farm campsites and pub stopovers (the Hamilton Arms in Stedham is well known for its Thai food and has a quiet car park around the back) or perhaps you favour pressing on down to Arundel, a fantastic base for a night or two.  From March to October the Mill Road car park, opposite the gates to Arundel Castle, is open overnight to campervans.  For £10 per night (please pre-book) you can grab yourself a quiet overnight spot in the centre of this beautiful town.

From Arundel head east towards Brighton and if you fancy a night of Wild Camping in the hills then head up to Devil’s dyke NT car park.  Here you can park, perched on the edge of the South Downs, and wake up to spectacular views.

If a day in Brighton is what you need to get into the festival vibe then park up at a campsite – a good idea if you need to fill up with fresh water and make sure you are all set for your festival days.  Brighton Caravan Club site is ideally located a couple of miles east of Brighton and a short walk to the Marina.  It is a picturesque spot with regular buses into town.
