A GlamperRV Golf Tour: North West England

Whilst the sports calendar struggled this year, it appears that golf was one of the winners enjoying a resurgence in popularity not seen in over a decade.  We have seen this first hand at GlamperRV luxury motorhome hire with many couples packing their golf clubs into the garage and a few even planning their entire trip around golf courses they wished to play.  If you are one of the many who have decided to dig out your dusty clubs and fancy a challenge for 2021 then how about weaving a few rounds into a GlamperRV Golf Tour?

I may know a birdie from a bogie but my knowledge of golf courses around the country is pretty limited and so #phone-a-friend was called for in writing this GlamperRV Golf Tour blog.  I was advised that if you are planning a trip with a few rounds woven in then quality is better than quantity.  As an island, the UK’s extensive coastline is home to many sensational links courses, many which you will recognize from the Majors they host and even if you are not a golfer their locations in themselves present fabulous places to visit.

I was not aware but the North West is home to some of the country’s most iconic golf courses. For the serious golfer a week here could provide plenty of challenge however for the more relaxed in our midst it also presents a fabulous opportunity to explore the region with its many sandy beaches, seaside towns and of course proximity to the City of Liverpool in the south and the Lake District to the North.

Liverpool has always been a city on my wish list since going through a renaissance post 2008 when it was European Capital of Culture.  Liverpool Marina offers fully serviced overnight stays for motorhomes and is a short walk into the City Centre which makes it a perfect place to stay for a day or two and explore the City.  If you wish to squeeze in a round whilst in Liverpool then a short drive across the Mersey will present you with a range of opportunities including the highly regarded Royal Liverpool Golf Club at the tip of the Wirral peninsula.

A fine dining experience is a key part of any trip in my book and I recommend you take a look at Moorhall, a two star Michelin restaurant set in stunning grounds or for something a little lighter The Barn at Moor Hall also has excellent reviews.  Just around the corner is Mossock Hall Golf Club which as well as ticking the golf challenge, may present a potential overnight spot (there is never any harm in asking😊)

Moving slowly up the coast is the pretty seaside town of Southport and home to some of the oldest, most established golf courses in the UK including the West Lancashire, Royal Birkdale, Formby and Southport & Ainsdale to name a few.  This region is rather packed with caravan parks however we have been recommended Waterside Lodge – a small independent site in an excellent location between the coast and a marine lake and a short walk into Southport.  Even without the attraction of golf this site provides a great location for exploring.

A few miles further north you will come to the pretty seaside town of Lytham & St Annes and the infamous Royal Lytham & St Annes golf course.  You can overnight in town at St Annes Pool car park or if you fancy something more rural try out Rigbys Farm House just outside town – if you eat in the restaurant your hook up is included!

A visit into Blackpool is a matter of choice but if you have children in tow then a stop off at the Blackpool Pleasure Beach is really a must.  For those who prefer to bypass the city then your next stop should be Morecombe Bay and I would highly recommend Archers Red Bank Farm, a lovely family run café and campsite in an outstanding location with spectacular views across the bay.

You may wish to continue your adventure up into the Lake District at this stage – packed with a wide range of activities it is a location in its own right but the mountains provide a wonderful contrast to the coastal experience you will have just enjoyed.

As ever I very much hope that this GlamperRV Golf Tour trip idea inspires you to get out and explore our stunning country.
