Trip of the Month – Exploring the Scottish Highlands

Our August trip of the month was an adventure in the Scottish Highlands.  The drive up to Scotland proved very easy with the GlamperRV easily cruising at the national speed limit and averaging 30mpg. It also meant an end to service station facilities – hugely valued by the female members!

Stopover one
Our first night was spent on the shores of Loch Tummel close to Pitlochry. We found a lovely flat spot in a Forestry commission parking area that served us well. In the morning we found a fabulous walk in the forest above the Loch direct from the parking area.

The day was spent driving up to visit friends in Nairn, taking in Aviemore, Loch Morlich and the Cairngorms Mountain Railway en route not to mention a fabulous drive along an almost deserted single track road across the moors!

Stopover Two
Our second night was in the driveway of a friends house in Nairn where we were treated to a delicious Haggis pie before heading back to the GlamperRV for another wonderful night.

After a leisurely start we headed for Loch Ness, taking the scenic, narrow south shore road which provided a great spot for setting up lunch on the beach and then heading off with our bikes to explore the cycle trails.

It was then the Westerly town of Arisaig that was our target for the night as the sun came out to take us out West.

Stopover Three
We opted for a campsite for our third night on the stunning coast of Western Scotland, close to Arisaig, overlooking the Isle of Skye. We ignored the midges to enjoy one of the most scenic dining spots and savouring the most stunning sunset.

The next morning we enjoyed a slightly damp walk along the beach, searching for shells and enjoying the stunning scenery before heading to Fort William from where we drove across Rannoch Moor and down into an almost deserted glen where we spent our fourth night.

Stopover four
One of the finds of our trip, nestled into the hills we found an idyllic spot for our final night. We felt very smug as we listened to the rain beating down most of the night knowing we were warm and dry in the GlamperRV.

Found another great cycle trail before heading south to get the Dunoon ferry and across to meet the motorway for our long, smooth drive south.

Having spent the earlier part of the summer in the south of France and Corsica the whole family voted Scotland as the best part of our travels. Such an intimate family experience with no set agenda but knowing we always had somewhere to sleep and something to eat!
