An Iberian Adventure

An Iberian Adventure

Firstly, I would like to share my very best wishes for a happy, healthy and adventurous 2025! May you enjoy your travels in style and comfort.
What better way to kick off the new year and banish those winter blues than to share some incredible GlamperRV adventures? In September, one of our amazing guests set off on an Iberian adventure to Portugal and Spain, and we’re so excited to share their route with you (see the image below)! If you’re looking for a more in-depth read, be sure to check out their blog.

While we know not everyone has 5 weeks to explore, this trip can easily be shortened. Another one of our happy customers recently completed a fantastic 2-week adventure (also via Brittany Ferries to Santander) that covered Northern Spain and Portugal. They couldn’t stop raving about the quality of the roads, campsites, and stunning scenery!

These trips are perfect for spring and autumn seasons, when the weather is gorgeous, campsites less crowded, and prices more competitive.

Without further ado, let’s dive into this amazing Iberian adventure! The first stop was an easy drive down to Portsmouth for the 28-hour ‘cruise’ down to Santander. This city never fails to disappoint; with wonderful sandy beaches, manicured grounds, and promenades, it’s a beautiful place to explore. Plus, you’ll find splendid buildings from bygone times when Santander was a thriving port. And for those who love to try new things, the tapas (locally referred to as pintxos) are a real highlight – a must-try for any foodie!

Due to weather conditions, our guests decided to take the anti-clockwise route, with their next stop being the Los Picos Mountains. The Las Arenas motorhome parking area was a great place to stay, close to a gorge with stunning hiking trails.

A favorite stop from the trip was Santiago de Compostela. This vibrant city is alive with throngs of friendly people, all with a special spiritual energy. The city center is beautiful, and there are a few campsites within walking distance. While overnight stays in cities can sometimes be a bit noisy, this was a great stop before moving on to the peaceful Peneda-Geres National Park in Portugal.

Our operations manager, Helder, is Portuguese and this is his favorite region of Portugal. He highly recommends staying at Parque Cerdeira, which is located right in the middle of the park. As with many national parks, there are very few campsites, so be sure to plan ahead for this stop. But it’s worth it for the incredible hiking trails, canoeing, horseback riding, and many other outdoor activities available here.

Refreshed and ready for another city adventure, our guests headed to the northern Portuguese city of Porto. Here, they were able to indulge in Portugal’s famous Pastel de Natas – and like our guests, you could even take a lesson to learn how to make them yourself! Parking close to the city center can be tricky, so our guests opted for a coastal campsite called Camping Canidelo. From there, they could easily catch a 10-euro Uber ride into the city.

The next stop was the university town of Coimbra, which many people say is a must-visit. The city has a huge university, and the buildings, the students, and the overall quirkiness create a really special atmosphere.

Another day, another university town! This time, our adventurers visited the beautiful walled city of Evora, with its rich history that includes wars, invasions, and religion. There are plenty of campsites close to the city center, making it a convenient stop.
After exploring all these amazing cities, it was time to head south for some beach time! The popular resort towns of Portimao and Lagos in the Algarve region boast some of the best beaches in Portugal, perfect for relaxing after all your touring.

Feeling revitalized, it was time to say “adeus” Portugal and “ola” Espana! Seville was the next city on the itinerary. Here, you can watch La Liga live or take a fun flamenco dancing lesson – whatever tickles your fancy!

Next on the list was Cordoba – the old town and the Mezquita are absolute must-sees! If you decide to park near the zoo like our guests, don’t be surprised if you’re woken up by the sound of lions roaring in the morning!

Heading towards Madrid, a stopover in Toledo was well worth the time. This city is built on top of 7 hills, so be prepared for some serious uphill and downhill walking! We recommend booking a walking tour – you might even get to visit an original house with elements dating back to Roman times! Camping El Greco on the outskirts of town is a fantastic base for your Toledo explorations.

Having enjoyed spending time in Madrid in a previous working life, I wasn’t surprised to hear that our guests loved exploring this vibrant Spanish capital. Camping Osuma is the only campsite within the city, and it’s just a short walk to the metro station, making it an ideal location.

Bilbao was their final stop for a visit to the Guggenheim Museum. There’s great motorhome parking in Area Zamudio, which is close to the train station for easy access to the city centre.

If you are considering a 2025 European adventure please get in touch.  I would be delighted to talk through ideas.
