High Force Falls
Our eldest is in the midst of sixth form life and thoughts are moving onto post school options. Whilst he’s debating the merits of university vs degree apprenticeship, we are planning a series of university visits this summer. To me this seems to be the perfect opportunity to combine trips to far away universities with a mini GlamperRV adventure. Two universities on his radar are Durham and Newcastle. I have therefore taken advice from a customer and plan to tie in with a visit to the High Force Falls. This fabulous looking location in the Upper Teesdale countryside of the North Pennines boasts one of the most impressive waterfalls in England. High Force Falls are a genuine force of nature, cascading 21 metres into the plunge pool below. It is bound to be spectacular this spring following all the rain we have had (there is always a silver lining!)
Our Site Spotlight – The High Force Hotel offers dedicated overnight motorhome parking a short walk from the waterfalls. The hotel itself promises evening meals in an elegant yet wonderfully relaxed setting, with open fires and plenty of rustic charm so in our eyes the perfect overnight stopover.
The stretch of the Pennine Way between Low and High Force is widely considered one of the most beautiful walks in the country, taking in stunning wildflower meadows and iconic views along the way. In addition to the universities which are an hour’s drive, there’s Raby Castle and Barnard Castle on your doorstep.
For those interested in visiting Durham, I have been advised to book early to secure a pitch at the Durham Amateur Rowing Club. It is a small site with facilities within walking distance of the university (as well as City centre for those simply planning a trip to this historic City).
Newcastle was proving slightly more challenging although the excellent metro network means that staying a few miles out of town is not an issue. We have been recommended a pub stopover next to the Newcastle City Golf Club which put a big smile on my son’s face!
I am rather looking forward to our university tours this year and if I can persuade my son to indulge my passion for exploring new places alongside the academic institutes (and the odd round of golf), I think we could have a hoot.
For those of you considering your own GlamperRV adventure, as always, let me know if I can help with trip ideas.
Happy planning
